陳雋然 Rainbow Chan
Hong Kong
陳雋然 Rainbow Chan is an award-winning vocalist, producer and multi-instrumentalist based between Naarm/Melbourne and Gadigal/Sydney. Her genre-bending art pop draws on matrilineal inheritance, cultural memory and diasporic identity. Working fluidly across music, performance and visual art, Chan has established herself as one of Australia’s most distinctive voices.
Her latest project, The Bridal Lament, marks a major new chapter. First developed as a solo theatrical work presented at Liveworks Festival, OzAsia, Arts House, and Riverside Theatres with Sydney Festival, The Bridal Lament draws on Chan’s Weitou ancestry (the first settlers of Hong Kong). Chan reimagines a historical pre-marital ritual, known as the bridal lament, in which brides publicly wept and sang before leaving their families. In her hands, these songs of grief and resilience become the basis for a striking new body of work connecting ancestral ritual with contemporary pop, performance and storytelling.
The music from the stage work forms Chan’s forthcoming third album, also titled The Bridal Lament, due for release in August 2026 via Music in Exile.
“A striking and unique homage to heritage and sisterhood that could only be led by an artist such as Rainbow Chan” – Rage.
Her 2021 Stanley EP was released via UK label Eastern Margins. Her second album Pillar (2019) was shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize and received national community radio support, while her debut Spacings (2016) was nominated for FBi SMAC Record of the Year and AIR Best Dance/Electronica Album. Its single “Nest” became FBi Radio’s most-played song of the year, and in 2017“Let Me”, from the EP Fabrica, won the FBi SMAC Award for Best Song. A compelling live performer, Chan has appeared at Iceland Airwaves, SXSW Austin, VIVID, MONA FOMA, Sydney Opera House, PuSh International Performing Arts Festival (Canada) and M+ Museum (Hong Kong). Alongside her music practice, she works across contemporary art, installation and sound design, bringing a strong visual and theatrical language to her songwriting and live performance.
