Music in Exile, Mnemosyne Projects & Old Carpet Factory present: Jutna

Late in 2024, seven musicians gathered at the Old Carpet Factory recording studio on the island of Hydra, Greece. They came from Senegal, Burkina Faso, France, the United Kingdom and Australia, meeting for the first time as they boarded a boat to the island that was to become their home.

They came together to explore how music moves across borders, following global migration patterns and bringing unique sets of knowledge and stories along for the ride. They sought to use music as a way to understand their different experiences of the world, and to ask:

“How does music carry us home?”

The album you hold in your hands is a record of their time spent together. At the generous invitation of the Old Carpet Factory and Mnemosyne Projects, the group spent seven short days (and extremely long nights) exploring stories of migration; of what is gained, and lost, when artists move across physical space in search of new opportunity.

In the words of the band recorded here, this album is a journey. This is not African music, nor ‘Western’ music. It is worldwide music, as complex and mulit-facted as the experiences of those individuals who recorded it.
